1. Compare and contrast the representation of American cultural myths in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire.

2. Compare and contrast the exploration of African American identity in Wright’s “The Man Who Was Almost a Man”, Hughes’ “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” and “The Weary Blues” and Morrison’s Beloved.

3. Compare and contrast the nature and effect of the humour used in Hurston’s “Eatonville Anthology” and two of the following texts: Malamud’s “The Magic Barrel,” Dixon’s “Time to Go” and Roth’s “Defender of the Faith.” (Note: Hurston is a required text; choose two only from the last three texts).

4. Analyse and discuss the weight of Irish history as represented in James Joyce’s “The Dead”, W.B.Yeats’ “Easter 1916” and Seamus Heaney’s “Casualty.”

5. Compare and contrast the representation of colonialism in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Graham Greene’s The Quiet American.

6. Compare and contrast the theme of love as represented by T. S. Eliot in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and by D.H. Lawrence in “Love on the Farm” paying attention to the use of imagery.
